    Writing - Samurai

    COWBOYS VS SAMURAIS
The Wild, Wild, West. A deserted village. The wind blows, kicking up the sand on the ground. Ragnar “Dead Shot” Rayleigh stands opposite his deadliest rival, the samurai Marc’emon.

“Well, well, well. I shoulda known it’d be you behind all the murders in this town, ya filthy Nihonjin.” Rayleigh said, hacking a ball of spit on to the ground. “It’s always the outsiders that cause us trouble.”

“The people I’ve killed were criminals. Scum of the highest order. But of course you wouldn’t see that, foolish American.” Marc’emon replied, his gaze steelier than the blade at his side.

“There ain’t no space for vigilantes in this town. I’m the only sheriff round these parts.” Rayleigh said, his hands reaching for his holsters. “You’re actin’ outside the law, samurai.”

Marc’emon placed his hand on the handle of his blade. “Choose your next move carefully, cowboy. Unless you want to be sliced into chunks, that is.”

Rayleigh laughed. “Has the saying “the gun is mightier than the sword” not reached your country yet? You’re about ta get shot full o’ holes.”

“The phrase is “the pen is mightier than the sword, jackass.” Marc’emon replied.

Incensed, Rayleigh fired a shot directly at Marc’emon’s head. With lightning quick reflexes, Marc’emon sliced the bullet clean down the middle. Fixing his eyes on the startled sheriff, he ran towards him, weaving past his shots.

“Your reign ends here.” Marc’emon began to unsheathe his blade, ready to slice his opponent in half. However, before he could act, he felt a tug on his kimono.

    “Marc’emon, please stop!”

Marc’emon turned to see who had interrupted him. As he saw her face, he was startled.

    “Soo Young…”

“Please, Marc’emon! Have mercy on him!” Soo Young begged.

“Why should I? He’s a charlatan in charge of a corrupt regime. It goes against my code to let him walk free.”

“Because…” Soo Young walked over to Rayleigh’s side. Wrapping her arms around his left arm and resting her head on his shoulder, she looked up at him with admiration.

    “Ragnar and I… are lovers.”

    “W-what?” Marc’emon replied, startled.

“Yes. I love him… and he loves me. We plan to wed next month.”

Marc’emon loosened the grip on his sword, placing it back in his sheath. Gritting his teeth, he took a deep breath, then relaxed.

“Oi, sheriff. What’s the meaning of this?”

    “The meaning of what?”

“What are you doing fooling around with my sister?”

“We ain’t foolin’ around, Nihonjin. I love this woman more than anythin’ in the world.”

“If you really loved her, you’d stop calling us Nihonjins.”

“Ah… I guess you’re right about that one.” Rayleigh replied. “But anyway. The reason I don’t fight criminals any more is Soo Young. I have to live for her… and for our baby.”

“Baby?!” Marc’emon replied, eyes widened with surprise.

“We’re expecting.” Soo Young replied, smiling.

“Right.” Marc’emon replied. “That was what I was expecting to hear today. Good grief. What do I do now?”

Rayleigh and Soo Young looked at each other and smiled. Looking back at Marc’emon, Rayleigh began his announcement. “Well…”

    *

Three years later. The same town, only less abandoned. Rayleigh and Soo Young’s bar. Marc’emon enters through the doors after a long day at work.

“Welcome!” Rayleigh shouted as Marc’emon entered, his grin wider than the River Nile.

Marc’emon nodded at Rayleigh and sat at the bar.

“So, brother. What will it be?” Soo Young asked, smiling.

    “The usual, please.” Marc’emon replied.

Rayleigh sat down next to the tired samurai. “So, busy day at work, Mr. Head Sheriff?”

“Don’t even get me started.” Marc’emon replied. “This town is full of troublemakers… and so is the jail.”

Rayleigh laughed. “Maybe you should loosen up a little.”

“All crime must be punished. That is the law.” Marc’emon replied. “But enough about work. How’s the kid?”

“Sound asleep, for once.” Soo Young replied, bringing Marc’emon his usual glass of bourbon. “He spends the entire day running around with that toy sword you bought him, knocking furniture over.”

Rayleigh laughed. “He’s just like his Uncle.”

“What kind of mental image do you have of me?”

Rayleigh, Marc’emon and Soo Young continued to chat away long into the night, reminiscing about the times they’d had in this little backwater town, and talking fondly of their aspirations for the future.

Sometimes, even the deadliest of showdowns can have a happy ending.

    END

The storm came in early this year. Heavy winds accompanied by rainfall and thunder. Sam could not help to feel a little excitement but was primarly worried for the citizens in this village.

As the drops knocked loudly on the roof of the inn, Yuri, the Innkeeper, came along his room to check up and to ask if I needed anything. "No, thanks I'm fine" he mumbled. "You sure you do not want to be downstairs with the rest of us man? The kids would love to hear some stories from you." asked Yuri. "Yes, yes, I'm perfectly fine." said Sam a little aggitated. "And no thank you, I'm not fond of the childy getty goodieness."

Yuri sighed and closed the door again and went downstairs. Sam on the other hand kept looking out of the window. Roaring winds, flashing thunders and stumping raindrops kept attacking the village. Not the best time for a mission like this, mumbled Sam in himself. Suddenly the inn started to shake. The earth splitted open somewhere and the mountain rumbled. The Inn could not hold this long for very long. Sam had to get somewhere safe. He had to complete his mission.

Sam took his sword and jumped out of his window, right into the bushes beneath it. He saw the vibration of the shockwave going through the building. Wooden structures started to crack, and every object jumped from one side to another. While Sam was getting back on his feet, the roof crashed in the first floor of the inn.

Sam's conscience started to speak. The mission or trying to save the people locked down in the inn smashed down due the power of the earth. His hands started to itch, his muscles started to tense. He grabbed the handle of his sword and took a deep breath. He made a mindmap of the inn. What is the easiest way for everybody to get out?

He kicked in the front door. While the first floor was fracturing under the pressure of the falling roof, he heard the kids screaming. He made the right choice. His honor as a warrior would not be touched. As he slashed through falling woodwork, he came at the door of the lounge room of the inn. The screaming and cracking noises started to blend. As he opened the door, the roof began to fall in.

Some wood came into his eye, while he kept parts of the roof above the heads of the screaming kids. "SAM! YOUR EYE!" yelled Yuri. "I don't give a flying duck about my eye. Save yourself and the kids!" shouted Sam. While Yuri escorted the kids out, Sam's eyes started to burn. One eye out of pain and the other because of the excitement. This life or death situation made his muscles itch even more. He took a slow and long breath.

"SAAAAMURAAAAAAAAAI" roared Sam (read as leroy jenkins) as he started to slash every falling bit of woodwork into pieces. The speed of the sword breaking the wood was beyond human. Sparks set small pieces in fire. When Yuri looked behind, he saw a demon. His guest moving around as he was possesed in a flickering red background.

"Two Samurai fighting in the rain"
A short story, by Eustace Swann

Maruko Kimura looked at the cursed katana in his hands, the infamous "Feather of the Phoenix" and felt ecstatic.

He walked over to the window and reflected on his quiet surroundings. He had always loved how chilly Gurin Temple felt between those steep, fierce mountains. It was a place that encouraged his tendency to seek tranquility.

But then he saw something in the distance, or rather someone. It was the figure of Shiyatsu Takahashi. Shiyatsu was a sinister ronin that prowled around the area and slaughtered entire villages. He had blonde hair tied in a top knot and he used to carry around the katana that the locals called the "Plague". This blade had tasted so much blood that its color had turned pitch black.

Maruko gulped. He glanced at his own reflection. He was a scruffy, miserable tea drinker with a lean build that had not worked out since high school. The locals, however, saw him as a promising, dependable protector of the temple. Once upon a time, he had teamed up with six more samurai to help a small village defend themselves against seven hundred mountain bandits.

But not even a dependable protector and one of the legendary "Seven Samurai", was prepared for what Shiyatsu had in store today.

The rain kept hammering into the tall grass, making Maruko worry about his wisteria garden, of which he was very proud.

As Maruko stepped outside and Shiyatsu came closer, he could see that sinister smile on his face, under that Roningasa he had on his head.

"You must be wondering why I've come here" Shiyatsu bellowed, in a somewhat strange tone, considering the rumors that accompanied him. He unsheathed the "Plague" and swang it at Maruko, aiming for his chest, with the force of 5000 eagles. "I'm ashamed of my thoughts, but I friggin' love you, Maruko."

Maruko, unsurprised by Shiyatsu's words, unsheathed his katana in nanoseconds and collided it against Shiyatsu's. Surely, their clash must have been heard by the nearest village, if it wasn't for the pouring rain. "BEGONE THOT" he replied, his mind still at the wisteria garden that was in danger due to the storm. It was as if the rain had been brought by the evil ronin.

They looked at each others' eyes, the one feeling heartbroken, the other vigilant, like two tigers ready to strike each other, while the shamisen played in the background.

Suddenly, Shiyatsu lunged forward and launched another devastating attack, this time aiming for Maruko's neck. Quickly, Maruko parried the attack with his katana, skillfully sidestepping (avoiding a mud puddle in the process) and brought it down on Shiyatsu's forehead, crashing his skull.

Shiyatsu's whole existence trembled with terror. He fell dead, his body as lifeless as his blood-thirsty sword.

The notorious Ronin had been killed.

Maruko Kimura, somewhat relieved but not entirely, went back inside thinking about his wisteria garden and made himself a warm cup of Earl Grey.

    "For Life and Honor"

Woke up in the morning as I hear the rooster crowing, simply thinking as I imagine the outcome of this day. As I get up and take a seat in my bed, I put a deep sigh and with this unexpected feeling of a heavy burden that I carry since last night came to realization as today is the day! I grab my katana near my bed and unsheathed it halfly, as I see my reflection in the katana, I see a horrified look of a man! (A thought came to mind; how can I pull this one off?). Regret is for later and overthinking too much will never get me results, for this specific day is important for what my future holds.

I was born and raised in Osaka in a small town called Tajiri from a lowly peasant-warrior family, I never really knew in person who my father was as he died in the battle of Ōshio Heihachirō's Rebellion (1837) when I was still an infant. I adore my mother as she was loving and caring to me, even in times of hardship and struggles my mother work's diligently as a nakai (a ryokan waitress) so that the two of us can survive in our everyday life. At the age of 8, My mother would then have planned to send me to Edo to study at a certain Dojo, which an old friend of my father was one of the Instructors. At first I was so hesitant to go, as I don’t want to leave my mother all on her own! I beg her to not send me to Edo as I don't want to leave her (I was crying while begging) I also question myself (Does my mother doesn’t want me anymore? Does she still love me? Why would she do that to her only son? What was the reason I was born in this world?) All these random thoughts in my head!

As the time passes, I realize that going to Edo and studying in the Dojo would benefit me and my mother and I think that this decision by mother was for my wellbeing. The everyday expenses, rent and the load of work my mother had would lessen if I'm gone. Thinking about it even though it hurts so much and as I don't want to be a burden anymore, I man up and agreed to go. After all the preparations are done, I bid my mother a heartfelt goodbye and promise her to do my outmost best to be a better person and make her proud when I come back home! With the recommendation letter at hand and my pack of things ready, I began my long journey to Edo.

A month has passed and I finally arrived at my destination "Edo" At the dojo I was greeted by my father's friend and one of the Dojo's instructor (as he was expecting my arrival) I greeted him with a bow and thanked him for helping and having me study in their Dojo, After the little introduction I was then taken and shown by a servant to my quarters, there I met my fellow students! I greeted them enthusiastically but only one guy greeted me back, while others did not mind of my presence. At night! As I was lying in bed deeply thinking on what will happen to my life from now on, I pray that everything would be alright and hope for better days to come in my life.

As time goes by and at the age of 16 with my diligence and hard work, I became one of the Top students in the Dojo. My Master who is a practitioner and a master swordsman of the Hokushin Itto-ryu Kenjutsu was very fond of me along with the other instructors! To them I was like a prodigy, but for me It was due to my diligence and hard work, it seems to paid off as I meet their expectations very well. I was the youngest of the Top 5 students at my Dojo along with my longtime friend Hisahiko who is 4 years older than me and a close relative of the Master (uncle-nephew relation)! Hisahiko is an exceptional student, he is kind, polite, reliable, generous and has integrity. In the past 8 years since I came to this Dojo, he was one of the few people that help me the most in my stay in Edo, especially at the Dojo and I owe him big time for that.

After morning practice was done, we ate our lunch and return back to the Dojo as there was an important announcement to be made. At the Dojo everyone was present (servants, students (senior students), instructors (senior instructors), Our Master and including a few Masters of different Dojos that have a close relationship with Our Master! A total of 120 people in attendance.) As Master stands up from his seat, he gives a speech and announced that he is going to retire his post as Master of the Dojo and is looking for his rightful successor. The place was filled with silence and then he suddenly said that he will be naming a student name and that name was Hisahiko and everyone in the Dojo clap their hands and cheered (it was to be expected as he was rank first in the Top students much more Hisahiko and Master are close relatives.) After everyone calm down (thinking that it was going to be the ending speech) Master named a second candidate to stand up and that name was Yoshinori (my name)!!!

It was probably due to being shock and at the same time very nervous as I was not able to stand up immediately (everyone was looking at me)! From the back of Dojo Hall one of the Senior Instructor yelled at my name and to immediately stand up, hearing that I muster up and regain my strength and was able to stood up. We were told to come to the front, there our Master told us that at a certain day and time the two of us Top students (Ranks 1st and 2nd) would have a Duel for the succession of being the Master of the Dojo and past the secret techniques of the Hokushin Itto-ryu Kenjutsu to the winner.

The night before the duel! At the Zen Garden, I really can’t think straight for this past few days and was very confused, I was going to face Hisahiko who is like an older brother, mentor and longtime friend to me and to compete for this damn tradition of successorship. I want to escape in this situation and ran away, when suddenly!!!

Hisahiko: There you are; I was looking everywhere for you; I was lucky enough to find you here.

Yoshinori: Ughhh! Hisahiko!!! (I greeted him with a bow) Why are you looking for me?

Hisahiko: I just wanted to see if you’re doing fine and to know what your thoughts from our upcoming duel?

Yoshinori: I never expected this to happen between the two of us, to tell you the truth I’m very scared, I can’t think straight since Master’s announcement and I was planning on running away tonight!

For the first time in my life seeing Hisahiko so furious to me!

Hisahiko: WHAT ARE YOU THINKING??? RUNNING AWAY ON OUR DUEL!!! (with a loud voice). I TOO DIDN’T EXPECT THIS TO HAPPEN BUT YOUR DISHONORING ME AND OUR MASTER!

Yoshinori: Huh!!! (looking at him) But I…………………. (Hisahiko is right) I apologize for what I said earlier and for disrespecting you and our Master! (Hisahiko is very resolved)!

Hisahiko: Please think this through (with a calm voice), I know it’s difficult for both of us but this is our duty. Let’s do our very best and we must accept whatever the outcome for tomorrow’s duel. It is my pride and joy to face you.

Yoshinori: I thanked you for everything (in a bowing position again), you’ve always been there for me! I know that I have disappointed you many times before and even today but you always encourage me to do my very best! I promise you (even though it hurts) for one last time to not disappoint you (while crying).

Hisahiko tapped at my back (while I’m still in a bowing position) and said to do my best and take a rest then walked away. At my room! I was writing a farewell letter to my mother, this would be the second time I’m writing her a letter since leaving Osaka (My mother writes me twice a year and she’s doing great and fine) I thanked her for being my mother (almost everything that I could think off) and promise to see her soon at the end of this month (not knowing if I’m dead or alive). I quickly send it to a Hikyaku (a courier or messenger)! It was past midnight and I was still thinking for a long time..……………………………………………………………………………………………………………… and fell asleep.

The Battle took place in a Shinto Shrine near Sensō-ji Temple, only a selected people were able to witness this duel of succession:

    ·Assisting Servants (4)

    ·The Remaining Top Students (3)

    ·Instructors, Senior Instructors (5)

    ·Masters Friends (2)

·and lastly our very own Master (1)

The Master (at the center) was seated at the front of the Shrine along with his friends, the instructors at the back and the students to the side of the shrine while two servants each were assisting us in our corners! Hisahiko and I went to the center and was facing our Master. Both of us made a standing bow for our greetings and went on to seiza posture (proper sitting) and performed a saikeirei (45 degrees’ deep bow) to pay our greatest respect to our Master. After bowing we stood up, look at each other and bow for our greetings and farewells! We go back to our corners to get our Katana’s and be fully prepared!

We slowly walk (3 steps) forward and was with each other’s strike distance! Hisahiko and I are both good at offense and defense,

Hokushin Ittō-ryū - is a very intense dueling style, which focuses on simple and fast techniques where no unnecessary movements are made.

But I have an ace on my sleeve, I also specialized in Iaijutsu (a combative quick-draw sword technique) which is a specialty of my late father! Before my father died, he saved a scroll containing of his techniques and was kept by my mother. As I slowly learned the way of the sword I incorporated my father’s techniques in my training.

Hisahiko was making a Kiri-otoshi stance (bringing your katana over your head and then slicing downward directly in front of you.) and as for me, I was still holding my katana still sheathed and was waiting for his first move. It was taking a long time and we were still at our stance (we were predicting each other’s movement through our mind’s) when suddenly Hisahiko dash towards me and is going for a full swing vertical slash, I was going to dodge his attack when in the midway of the swing it became a full thrust (with an opening and my katana still sheathed! It was impossible for me to dodge his attack) Knowing that there was no escape, I then pulled my sword (still sheathed) and use the kashira (the cap at the end of the katana handle) aiming for the katana’s kissaki (tip of the katana) to parry it. With the force too strong I’ve manage to push Hisahiko back, seeing him in an unstable state I launched a counterattack. I focus my strength on my right foot (with full power) in an instant I leap towards Hisahiko and unsheathed my katana for a quick-draw horizontally (while in midair this will add more force when I land) aiming his head……………………………………………………………………………………..

I was able to severed Hisahiko’s head (it was a clean cut), I was so emotional as I was going for the instant kill, I saw Hisahiko’s smiling face and then I started crying seeing my katana with his blood on it (It was my first time killing someone). For a moment there was silence (I could hear my Master and fellow students crying)! After a while the servants immediately tended to Hisahiko’s dead body, Our Master stood up in his chair (still grieving) and congratulated me. I was then given the Okuden Scroll (It contains the inner or master level and the highest and most secret teachings and techniques of the school.) Since then I became the New & Youngest Master of the Hokushin Itto-ryu Kenjutsu.

A new morning has come; I woke up not hearing the crow of the rooster anymore! I sat at my bed and unsheathed my katana halfly, I looked at it and it was the same look as I did in the past. Ever since I became the New Master, I was very successful in managing the Dojo and our numbers keeps growing to this day. Thinking about it now, I always question myself if all of this was worth it? I still can’t answer this question until to this day and the past still haunts me. Today is an important day as I’m going to name the next successor but this time around it will be different as I’m going to break and end the tradition of the school’s successorship. They will not suffer the same fate as we did in the past my dear friend.

    End
